The rule of thumb for the best hole quality when performing the cut with either an air plasma or oxygen-based high-definition system is that the hole diameter should be no smaller than the plate thickness. Usually holes are used to bolt finished assemblies together. In addition, you should carefully consider the table’s acceleration capabilities and ensure the maximum cut speed is high enough for your needs.Ī variety of different requirements exist for hole quality on steel parts.
Any table you consider should include a fully functional height control and good CAM (postprocessing) software. This variation is especially pronounced with light industrial or entry-level tables. The process capability varies considerably between manufacturers. Keep in mind that not all plasma machines are the same. If you are having trouble achieving the desired quality when cutting holes, there are tips and techniques that might help. Holes that are out-of-round or that have taper (the top of the hole is larger than the bottom) are common problems in many shops. Hole quality in particular is one of the most frequently discussed topics in regards to CNC plasma cutting. With a little troubleshooting, you can almost always find a resolution to your cut quality problems by selecting the right plasma torch consumables, adjusting your power levels (amperage), and tweaking cut speeds and cut heights. When it comes to CNC plasma cutting, the same basic questions regarding cut quality always seem to surface. Part II will address dross, edge angularity, warpage, and edge metallurgy. Part I addresses achieving quality when cutting holes.

The Plasma Torch Protection System works great with floating torch riser systems found on some CNC cutting tables.Īnother great feature you won’t find in any other magnetic torch breakaways at this price is that our Magnetic Breakaway Machine Torch Mount allows you to bevel cut.Editor’s Note: This is the first article in a two-part series about cut quality in CNC plasma cutting machines. Some of our customers have their CNC cutting tables set up with both plasma and oxy fuel torches. This neat feature allows you to use an oxy fuel machine torch without having to remove the gear rack. This is a feature not seen in other products.Īnother great reason for a gear rack slot is that the standard plasma machine torch barrel is 1 3/8” diameter which is the exact same diameter as an oxy-fuel machine torch. The plasma torch outer holding clamp has the gear rack slot machined into it which allows you to use a plasma machine torch with or without the gear rack attached. You will see the precision fit and build quality the minute you remove it from the shipping box. There is no way for these magnets to ever pull out of their attracting sides. All of the magnets are pressed in precision machined counter bores. Alignment pins work however, breakaway force will in fact change in relation to alignment pin placement. It has proven to be a better design than a breakaway that uses magnets on only one side of the breakaway and some kind of metal plate and alignment pin system on the other. Utilizing the magnets this way makes the two halves self-aligning. We use rare earth magnets on both the mount for the riser and the torch mount plate. We do manufacture and offer adapters for a few of the CNC cutting tables that come from the factory with their torch holder as part of the riser assembly such as Torchmate. All units are shipped with a basic stainless hardware mounting kit and safety lanyards.
